COACHING STAFF

Steve Armstrong
  • HEAD COACH STEVE ARMSTRONG:
    1994-Present

    Steve is in his 14th year as Head Coach of the Pioneer Hockey Team.

    A Pioneer graduate, Steve played for the 1979-82 hockey teams, including the 1980-81 State Championship runner-ups.

    Before returning to Pioneer as a coach. Steve spent five years coaching teams in the Ann Arbor Amateur Hockey Association.
    1994, earned a Masters of Science degree in Physics Education from Eastern.

    Steve is currently in his fourteenth year of teaching Physics and Math at Pioneer.

    He is supported by his wife Lori, daughters Danielle and Shannon and son Nathan.

Dave Huntzicker
  • ASSISTANT COACH DAVE HUNTZICKER:

    Dave is starting his fifth year as a coach with Pioneer.

    Dave graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in Organizational Studies.

    Dave was a four year letter winner while playing hockey for UM. He was captain in his senior year. Dave was awarded the Bob Ufer spirit trophy in his freshmen year. In addition, he was part of the National Championship Hockey Team his freshmen year.

    After college he signed an NHL contract with the Calgary Flames. He played two years with there minor league affiliate before retiring due to injury.

    Dave currently lives in Ann Arbor.

Geoff Blow
  • ASSISTANT COACH GEOFF BLOW:

    Geoff has been coaching and assisting Steve Armstrong for the past fourteen years.

    Geoff is a 1967 graduate of Pioneer High School. He played goalie under Art Armstrong. In addition he played goalie for Ann Arbor travel teams.

    Geoff's son is also a Pioneer Hockey team graduate.

    Geoff has the special skill for assessment for hockey skate rockering and sharpening. He maintains all the teams skate blades for games and practice. Geoff is often at the Cube at 5:00 o'clock in the morning working on team skates.

    Geoff enjoys working with Coach Armstrong and the Pioneer players.

Andrew Byer
  • ASSISTANT COACH ANDREW BYER:

    Andrew and his family recently moved from Orono Maine to Ann Arbor to be closer to his wife’s family who reside in Ann Arbor.

    He attended the University of Maine where he earned an Undergraduate Degree in Elementary Education and a Masters Degree in Special Education.  He is currently working as a Teacher Consultant at Pioneer High School.

    This will be his seventh year of coaching high school hockey at a competitive level. For the past six years he was an assistant hockey coach at Orono High School.

    During that time he helped coach the Orono High School Hockey team to two Eastern Maine Finals and one State Final.  He looks forward to working the players and the coaching staff at Pioneer.
